- Congressman Goodlatte introduced House Joint Resolution 1, a balanced budget Constitutional amendment, which will force Congress to enact fiscally responsible spending measures, reduce the debt, and ensure that the money our citizens work so hard to earn is not squandered on wasteful spending and programs.
- Congressman Goodlatte has introduced House Resolution 510, the Tax Code Termination Act, which would repeal the entire tax code (except portions that deal with Social Security and Medicare) by December 31, 2010, and calls on Congress to approve a new Federal tax system by July of the same year. This legislation has already been passed twice by the House of Representatives, first in 1998 by a vote of 219-209 and then in 2000 by a vote of 229-187.
- Congressman Goodlatte has Co-Sponsored House Resolution 926, the Strengthening the Ownership of Private Property (STOPP) Act which cuts off all federal economic development aid to state or local governments that abuse their eminent domain power by seizing private property for private development purposes. It was introduced in response to the narrow 5-4 U.S. Supreme Court decision, Kelo v. City of New London, which gave local governments broad eminent domain power to seize private property from one party and give it to another.
- Since arriving in Congress in 1993, Congressman Goodlatte has supported multiple pieces of legislation which promote the establishment of a balanced budget and eliminate wasteful government programs. He is steadfast about Congress holding the line on government spending which is why he consistently votes for the tightest budgets possible each year. The federal government must be lean and efficient and fiscally responsible.
- Congressman Goodlatte supported the Deficit Reduction Act, signed into law February 2006, which will reduce the deficit by $39 billion and reform important government programs to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse.
- Congressman Goodlatte has consistently received the ‘Hero of the Taxpayer’ Award from Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) in recognition of his taxpayer friendly voting record.
- Congressman Goodlatte has consistently received the ‘Friend of the Shareholder’ Award from the American Shareholders Association for his votes to protect shareholders and enhance economic growth.
- Congressman Goodlatte has received the ‘Small Business Advocate’ Award from the Small Business Survival Committee for his strong commitment to America’s small business and entrepreneurial sector.
- Congressman Goodlatte has received the ‘Benjamin Franklin Award’ from the 60 Plus Association in recognition of his sponsorship of legislation to repeal the “death” tax.
- Congressman Goodlatte has received the ‘Spirit of Enterprise’ Award from the United States Chamber of Commerce for his strong support for a pro-business legislative agenda.
- Congressman Goodlatte has received the ‘Taxpayer Hero’ Award from Citizens Against Government Waste which is given to Members dedicated to easing the burden on the American taxpayer and cutting government spending.
